Signs are everywhere in our life. Much like parents or trusted friends, they keep us pointed in the right direction and away from danger, offer advice or encouragement, and are a point of reference for where we are.
Most of them are pretty straightforward but every now and then there’s a story behind the sign.
My crazy husband ran a series of races over the weekend, logging five miles Friday night, a half marathon Saturday morning and another half marathon Sunday morning. You can bet seeing this sign at the finish line Sunday morning was very welcome. Sixty-five people ran all three races and Jim came in first in his age group every time.
There was another sign at the finish line Sunday morning for this mom….with the flip side reminding her she actually paid for the privilege of running that many miles! In my personal experience races always seem like a good idea when the reality of participating in them is many months later than the process of signing up for them.
A successful race deserves a fitting reward so we found this Nebraska craftbeer brewery in Lincoln. When I asked about their name I was regaled with this story: Before he went into the beer business, the owner had built a zipline in his back yard. The line lasted until his daughter broke her leg using it. When he subsequently came up with the idea to start a brewery, a friend’s reaction was….”that’s about as good of an idea as having a zipline in your backyard.” And so the name was born.
Perhaps the most amusing sign of the weekend was found in the women’s restroom at Zipline.
Or perhaps this one, which tells you exactly how many miles I managed to run over the course of the three days in which my husband ran 31.2……
