Sunrise.
Sunset.
Sunrise.
Sunset.
Swiftly fly the years.
One season following another,
laden with happiness and tears.
Yep, that song from Fiddler On The Roof has been stuck in my head since WordPress issued this photo challenge last Wednesday.
There’s just a whole lot of truth in those words. As quickly as a day passes, so do the years, but often only when we’re looking back on them. When we’re in the midst of them, the days are often long for one reason or another.
It’s all about perspective.
I was reminded of this when I stopped at a small cemetery in Louisiana last Saturday. This gravestone, with it’s interpretation of sunrise to sunset, made me pause.
I didn’t personally know Tremendous Deundra Davis and I’ll probably never know his story but I’ll bet there was some amazing living that went on between his sunrise and his sunset and looking at the dates between them, I know it passed in the blink of an eye. There simply weren’t enough seasons between the first date and the last.
Stopping here reminded me that although we live with the date of our sunrise throughout our lives, we don’t know on what day our sunset will occur.
It’s a good day when we can remember that and live accordingly.
*The sunrise and sunset photos in this post were taken at Shadowlawn, a property owned by some dear friends who allowed us to homestead in their camp house for a few months while we transitioned from Virginia to Louisiana. The owners often commented on the many moods of the lake and it was a privilege to live there for a few months of sunrises and sunsets. I never tired of photographing them or of waking up to yet another gift of a day on Cross Lake.

I feel deeply moved by this post. To name a child Tremendous seems like such a testament of love, hope and potential. And somehow, not enough seasons indeed….
