October Is My Happy Place

Posted by pausesandclicks on 10/15/2015

Through every long, hot, sweltering summer I wait for October.  The month itself is my happy place.

October encompasses thirty-one days of transition during which summer lingers and obstinately hangs around, the first days of the month often acting like they belong to August, but eventually giving way to shiver inspiring mornings and nights that beg for fires to be lit.

IMG_5544

The greens of summer hold on as long as they possibly can, reluctantly giving way to the yellows and golds that are the harbingers of nature’s last burst of celebration, when reds and oranges emerge in a blaze of glory before the woods settle into the deep sleep of winter.

IMG_5510

I turn to the woods on October days. There’s solitude in them, and a peace that takes hold of my soul.  Leaves twist and turn, caught by the wind as they flutter from high perches to take their place on the carpet of color at my feet. Small streams meander alongside, and often in the way of, well-worn walking paths. I stop, fascinated with the movement of light and color beneath and on top of the water.

On this 15th day of October, I sit on my deck, surrounded by the very woods I walk in, and I can feel the expectancy of the cacophony of color that lies in wait. It’s close. Within a week these trees will be glorious and I’ll try to spend as much time as I can among them.

IMG_5598

As I wait I have memories of other autumns and other Octobers in other places.

I came into this world in October. When the time comes, I hope I also exit it during this glorious month.  Before the first snow comes I want autumn leaves to rest on my grave.

Boundaries, Both Real and Imagined

Boundaries become a part of our lives from the moment we become mobile.  They keep us out, the keep us in, they keep us from falling over the edge.  Most of the time they’re designed to help us, to keep us from wandering into trouble.

Being the mostly rule-abiding person that I am, I don’t usually question them.

The ones I do find myself questioning lately are the hardest ones of all to get through or around….

IMG_2872

….the self-imposed boundaries that make me fearful of stepping out of my comfort zone and discovering my possibilities.

Most people, in their mid to late fifties have already stared down those demons.

After thirty-five years of being a military spouse and fulfilling that role without second-guessing it, I find that being without boundaries is disconcerting.  And if I’m feeling this way, I’m more than certain my newly retired husband is also on the same page.

Stayed tuned and I’ll let you know what happens when we start pushing those imagined boundaries and turn that page.

Change, It Just Happens

Posted by pausesandclicks on 10/01/2015

Some change is brought about deliberately and with much thought.

Other change just happens.

wedding3 copy - Version 2

Thirty-eight years ago today I married my high school sweetheart.  In many ways it seems like yesterday.  In many other ways it seems like we’ve been married forever.  I hardly remember who I was before I said “I do.”  A very large part of who I am is because of him and we’ve grown into who we are now, side by side.

IMG_5884 - Version 2

When I was in high school I worked at a Frisch’s restaurant as a car hop and then as an inside waitress.  Every night the same elderly woman would come in and sit at the counter.  When I got engaged at the ripe old age of 18 she lectured me continually against getting married so young.  She also spent a lot of time telling me how quickly time would pass.

I didn’t believe her and came to resent it every time she would tell me yet again how the years would fly by.

Here I am.  And yes, they have flown.

The changes came, and looking back, I pretty much missed them.

Change can sneak up on you and suddenly you wake up, closer to 60 than 50, and married almost four decades. I’m hoping the changes that come in our next thirty-eight years together are kind to us. Happy Anniversary Jim!

Concerning Grids and Differences

In color, this grid of grids pushed and pulled and fought.  In black and white it compliments and converses and works together as a whole.

I can’t help but compare it to Pope Francis being in the US.  Wouldn’t it be miraculous if his presence caused all  of us to put aside political agendas and differences, in the interests of all segments of society learning how to listen to each other, instead of just hearing ourselves?

“Pope Francis is an extraordinary learner, listener and self-doubter. The best part of this week will be watching him relate to people, how he listens deeply and learns from them, how he sees them both in their great sinfulness but also with endless mercy and self-emptying love.”

Quoted from this New York Times Op Ed article by David Brooks: Pope Francis, The Prince of the Personal

This Particular Monochromatic Life

This ship.

At the height of WWII there were 2300 men living on it in very close quarters, for months and months on end.

From what I saw today, it would have been a very monochromatic life….

These Connecting Paths

Northern Virginia is well-known for a lot of things.  One of the most pleasant is an extensive network of trails that connect neighborhoods and towns. Less than two weeks after moving back to our home here my husband and I ditched all the unpacked boxes and unfinished projects to go out on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, one of our favorites.

IMG_4607

Jim likes to get a long run in, early on Sunday mornings, so I often take our Lab and walk at the same time.  This past Sunday a side trail distracted me and I was rewarded with the discovery of the Fannie Mae Park in Reston, a beautiful oasis off the side of the W&OD, tucked among the trees.

IMG_6021

I felt compelled to return the next day to explore farther, this serene place that I just happened upon, because one trail connected to another.

And so, it isn’t always just trails or bridges that connect.  Fannie May connects their employees to nature by providing this on their campus.  I admire a company that thinks this way.

As I left the park and wandered back to the trail I found two benches with these plaques, which connect the public to people who have gone before us.  And this, perhaps, is the best connection of all….being out on the trail and being reminded that a long line of walkers, runners and bikers has gone before us.  It gives us a sense of place in the world and the realization that while we’re only here for a short time, our presence can be felt long after we’re gone.

IMG_6129

When I finally venture out to the W&OD Trail on my bike, I think I’ll do it for Steve and Joe.

From This Viewpoint At Arlington

One of the most solemn and recognizable places in our nation’s capital is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.  When witnessing the changing of the guard spectators usually gather on the steps of the Memorial Amphitheater, which lies right in front of the tomb, and their focus is on the tomb itself, but one September morning in 2007 I turned around and saw this.

IMG_6194

It’s one of my favorite photos from Arlington so this week, eight years later, I returned to photograph the amphitheater from other angles.

This Night Was A Good Night

Posted by pausesandclicks on 08/28/2015
Posted in: Military Life. Tagged: Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Charity Ball, Instagrams, meshphotochallenge, weekly photo challenge: today was a good day, wine dinner. Leave a comment

As the wife of a general officer in the Air Force I’ve had the opportunity to travel to some beautiful places, partake in many interesting events and meet inspiring people along the way.  All of that culminated in an experience last week, just after we’ve gone through my husband’s retirement ceremony and moved back to our home in Virginia.

IMG_4476

Every spring the Air Force holds a Charity Ball to raise money for the Air Force Aid Society. This past year some of our civic leaders from Shreveport, LA attended the ball and “won” the opportunity to attend a wine dinner sponsored by General (R) Norty and Suzie Schwartz and Maj Gen (R) John and Gail Brooks.  I was fortunate to be able to attend the dinner and although I didn’t take my camera, I did have my phone and so today I’m taking WordPress up on the challenge to use a new (to me) application to post phone pictures in a blog, using Mesh.

Yep, I’ve waited until the last-minute to post, as new technology usually scares me. 🙂

Your invite into my evening starts with the people I shared it with. Every one of them are people I would not have known had the Air Force not intersected our lives and I’m grateful for the deep friendships that have developed with them.

http://me.sh/qqzw5gy

What would a wine dinner be without the setting, the wine and the food?  I didn’t get images of every single course because frankly, I was often too immersed in the conversation, the explanations, and the tasting to remember to record it, but I did capture most of them. As you click through each photo there’s an explanation about the food and the wine served.

https://me.sh/7wxjuq6

An evening like this doesn’t happen without the dedication of a lot of people so I did duck behind the scenes a few times to capture what was happening in the kitchen and recorded our wine expert at the table imparting his extensive wisdom to us.

https://me.sh/24o0jc

The food and wine, and the people we shared it with, would have made for a very memorable evening but it was the music that really added the “over the top” dimension to our night.  In-between courses we were treated to the talents of the extraordinary Layendecker family with the father, Maestro Denny Layendecker on keyboards, and his daughters, Audrey , a vocalist, and Juliana, on the violin.

https://me.sh/x6j5aat

Since I always have Instagrams with me I offered to let everyone choose their favorite.  While I may not have caught everyone in action during the dinner I captured most them in these photos.  These are the people who made this night possible and gave the eight of us around the table another epic experience together.

https://me.sh/7yl3rls

A special thanks to this couple, who opened their home to benefit the Air Force Aid Society and created our “night for the books” with dear friends.

Creeping Through My Archives

I’ve been unpacking a house all week so this week’s challenge takes me back to other years and pictures I’ve already made.

I’m pretty sure my “Grandma designation” was put in jeopardy with this image.

After all, grandparents are supposed to take cute pictures of the their grandkids, not creepy “children of the corn” pictures.
