Poetry To Go

In the middle of a move from Nebraska to Washington DC my husband and I stopped very briefly in our hometown to take a break from driving and to visit with his parents.  After eating lunch in a “church turned craft brewery,” while we were out exploring and enjoying the surprisingly cool breezes that are rare on August days in this river town, my sister-in-law spotted this mailbox in the Over the Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio

The instructions told the finder to take a copy of the poem inside.

Consignment

The day dawns unfamiliar purple,

shedding darkness of the winter sky.

We will toast to a rare warmth today –

and a home to be occupied later.

I have spoken soulfully of homes –

what do they mean

on an ocean’s side,

or a looming shadow in a small town,

or the home I presently sit in

which has reinvented itself –

refuge, reception, reality, retreat.

Now shards of sunlight

break through the deepness,

puncturing what was supposed to be

a welcomed silence

after the children were gone.

We will trade in emptiness

for consecration,

and commotion of the city.

Today only the dog breaks the hush,

in his unspoken pact to protect.

In his tomorrow, and mine,

there will be many dogs and smells

to compete with my attention.

I don’t know how I will dwell,

in this new place we are making.

I feel only a heightened awareness

of someone re-purposing her life.

AJW 2/2012 – Upon signing our contract for 1419 Race Street.

What a perfect message for two people on their way to “what comes next” after 35 years in the Air Force.  We too, are re-purposing our lives and moving, just the two of us…and our dog…back into a house that was teeming with family the last time we lived at that address.

As a thank you, I left one of my Instagrams tucked in their mailbox.

The following was written at the bottom of the page the poem was printed on: “This project is brought to you by Connecting in Community through Creativity, seeking to connect the everyday life to the extraordinary soul.”

My hope is that many extraordinary souls are connected through this somewhat “out of the ordinary” exchange.

Is there a better thing to have beneath your feet on a hot summer day than a splash pad?

It’s All In The Details

When I was in grade school The Weekly Reader was something I looked forward to; my favorite part was trying to guess what was pictured in the column that featured an object photographed up close.  I didn’t know what macro photography was back then and certainly couldn’t conceive of a world with smartphones and apps that brought it to my fingertips 24/7, but that early fascination with those images has certainly brought me, in part, to how I see the world today.  Many of my daily Instagrams are up close and personal.

This week I visited dear friends in Louisiana and was delighted to find Elephant Ears (Colocasia) growing by their pool.

They were majestic and intriguing from afar but it was getting close to them that really held my interest.

In many aspects of life, not just the visual, the real story usually lies in the layers and minutia that exist beneath the surface.  It takes time to slow down enough to discover those layers but it’s always worth it.

Half In, Half Out

IMG_5263

On a humid Nebraska summer afternoon the elk at the Wildlife Safari knew exactly where to be to combat flies and heat…..half in, half out, of the water.

IMG_5264 2

I think my husband is feeling a bit of the same this week….half in and half out.  Although his retirement ceremony was Monday morning, for a variety of reasons he’s still working for another few weeks.  In many ways, that made the whole thing much less emotional for us.  We have a few weeks to ease out of this way of life and by the time we drive off the base for the last time on active duty, like these elk, we’ll only be concerned with what to do to while away a hot summer afternoon.

IMG_5168

For a while at least…..he keeps telling everyone he’s going to be my full-time life coach. I’m thinking he needs to find his next “real job” really fast!

A Life Changing Symbol

Although this symbol wasn’t designed until 1999 and wasn’t designated officially until 2004, it has defined my life since 1980.  In fact, it’s become such an ingrained part of our Air Force culture, I was surprised to read it hasn’t been around since my husband was first commissioned.  In my mind, it’s always been with us.

IMG_3475

Like our flag, it requires no explanation, and it stirs up a wellspring of emotion when I see it.

For the past 35 years this symbol has defined my husband, our family, and our way of life.

“Our” retirement ceremony is this coming Monday.

It’s been an amazing ride.

My heart is full.

Thresholds In My Life

I can almost audibly hear the doors closing behind us as my husband transitions out of the military this month.  There are just so many “lasts.”

At the same time I’m excited about the doors we’re standing in front of.  I’m excited about what lies on the other side of them, and most importantly, I’m trusting that it’s good.

I came across this round door in Belgium a few summers ago and have thought about it many times since.  I’ve concocted many stories in my head about the lives on the other side of this delightful portal.

BelgiumDoor

Would it not be completely amazing to come home to this every day?

I suspect it might impact my life, in a good way, to live on the other side of this door.

I hope to put a new door on the house we’re moving back into in Virginia.  The old door is plain and I want something that makes a statement about this new chapter in our lives.  I doubt it will be round but it will most certainly be beautiful.

Cue The Muses

In November of 2013 my husband and I packed everything up for the 25th time in his military career and moved to Nebraska. After a long day of driving I had just enough light left to walk the dogs. On the way back to our temporary quarters I came up the hill on the other side of these trees and only turned around as an afterthought.

This became my Instagram for that day: 11.8.13

tree7.14

That was a rough move for me and in the months that followed I took many long walks with Boudreaux and Xavier, often crossing over to this side of the base, even after moving into our new home on the other side of the runway. Something always drew me back to this setting and these trees.

They became my muses.

I learned to know them in all seasons and in many moods.

They never disappointed me.

Soon I’ll be moving back into those temporary quarters as my husband and I make our transition out of the military.  For a few weeks these trees will once again be right around the corner from where I’m living.

It would be very fitting for my last Instagram, on my last day, to be of my Nebraska muses.

I’ll work on that.

An Off Season Girl

Most people I know and love are summer people.  During the long winter months they yearn for longer days, warmer temperatures and the coconut smell of sunscreen.

Me……in the middle of a sweltering summer, this is what I long for.
