From Ashes Comes a Rebirth

An old building. unused for decades and abandoned, speaks volumes to the passerby. A person can’t help but hear the voices that used to resonate within and it doesn’t take much imagination to envision the activity that used to occur in the space when the building was alive with people.

Unfortunately many of them end up in rubble, succumbing to the fate of the wrecking ball.

Not so for Shreveport’s Central Fire Station which stands just a few blocks away from the building pictured above. Built in 1922 and home for many years to the dedicated firemen who resided there when it was an active engine house, it has found new life.

img_2869

Today that building, now known as Central Artstation, has been repurposed as home to the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, containing their offices, meeting and work spaces, and galleries. And history….for this Council didn’t just renovate and occupy the building, they kept the history intact, incorporating into its design the voices of the firefighters who used to work here.

The fire pole is intact, as is the activity board with names still inscribed of the last firefighters who worked at the engine house.  Uniforms and equipment are displayed alongside artwork that reflects the former use of the building, meshing the old and the new, keeping one set of memories alive while encouraging new memories to take hold.

The old hose tower behind the station, where fire hoses were once hung to dry, is now a place for Artists in Residence and guests of the Arts Council to spend the night.  The tower was originally built to equal the height of the highest building in Shreveport so firemen could practice running up the floors in full gear.  Now it tests the physical stamina of visiting artists, as each floor contains a single room, with the bedroom being at the very top.  Topped with a neon flame, it also summons forth the original use of the building.

All of this is guarded over by Art, the best dalmatian ever, who stands vigil over Artstation and the surrounding neighborhood.  I’m pretty sure he embodies the heart and soul of any fire station dog that ever existed.

And here’s the irony in all of this.  The building that used to house the Arts Council burned down.  This phoenix did rise from the ashes. And what a better place for that to happen than in an abandoned fire station?

Southern Grace

I’d forgotten, in the three years since I left Louisiana, how wonderful and graceful the South can be.

Every single receptionist takes the time to ask how I am, and instead of simply engaging in the business of scheduling an appointment or taking a payment, they genuinely want to know how my day is going.  Sales clerks generally aren’t rushed.  The local dry cleaner comes out to the car to get your clothes and delivers the clean ones back to you with a smile. When people find out I’ve just moved back their welcome is heartfelt.

And I can’t help but notice the trees.

img_5578

My walks with Xav might no longer be in the woods I loved so much in Virginia but these southern trees have their own way of reaching gracefully for the sky, seeming to line up in order, standing as sentinels out here, bringing a new and different kind of smile to my inner self.  They grace my footsteps.

And although pelicans aren’t normally associated with grace, the white pelicans here, as they glide across the lake in the morning, have a special kind of fluidity that seems to defy gravity.

Proving that grace can be found where you least expect it.

Choosing My Ambience

Last week this was the view out my kitchen window.

img_5082

And this is what I often saw on my daily walk with Xav.

img_5412

This week, a two day car ride later, the change is radical.

img_2661

I’ve exchanged the densely wooded and beloved surroundings of our “crooked house in the woods” in Virginia for this beautiful water view out the windows of our temporary home in Louisiana.

img_5284
img_5508
img_5305

Everything about the ambience of my surroundings has changed.

I’ll miss having four seasons and I’ll miss walking for miles and miles in any direction through woods that change dramatically with each of those seasons.  Admittedly, one of my greatest challenges of living here will be getting used to a climate of either “summer” or “not summer” but I’ve lived here before and I have roots of sorts in this very city, not to mention good friends.  In no time at all this will be home.

Ambience, after all, can also come from within and I have always believed that we are, indeed, supposed to bloom where we are planted.

This little guy on my deck railing this morning reminds me that some things remain the same no matter what state I live in.  There’s no doubt the squirrels  in Louisiana will soon be stealing my bird seed just as aggressively as they did in Virginia!

The Name We Share

Posted by pausesandclicks on 01/13/2017
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: family, family name, initials, weekly photo challenge: names. 7 Comments

My youngest son got married last month and his wife took our family name as her own.  All three of our daughters-in-law have chosen to change their names.

Version 2

That certainly isn’t a given and I would have been totally fine with it had they chosen to keep their maiden names.  I get that and I understand it, but my old-fashioned self wanted them to have the same last name as their husbands, for them to take that familial leap of faith.

I’ve never stopped identifying myself as a Crosby even though I’ve been a Kowalski twice as long as I was a Crosby.  When I graduated from college and they announced my name as I crossed the stage I was sad for my parents that the Crosby name wasn’t announced or on my diploma.  That day I found myself wishing I had changed my middle name from Mary to Crosby when I legally changed my last name, thus retaining on paper, in addition to in heart, that early sense of self.

When I had married several years earlier, at 18, I was totally delighted that by taking the Kowalski name my new husband and I had the exact same initials….JMK.  I envisioned many sets of monogramed bath towels in my future.   Changing my middle name to Crosby would have negated that.

Bending With The Wind

For a year and a half I’ve paused at this tree next to this creek bank in these Virginia woods, wondering when it was finally going to fall, what storm would prove to be too much for an ancient root system, which wind gust would push it over.  I’ve also wondered about its history.  How long has it been standing here, how many birds has it harbored in nests, how many generations of children have attempted to climb it?  Has a rope every been tied to its branches so children could swing out over the water?  How many winters has it been covered in snow?  How many springs saw it leaf out into a cacophony of brilliant new green leaves?

img_5367

The trees here grow very tall and very strong.  They tower above me for as far as I can see, testimonies to strength and the ability to weather many storms and weather conditions.  For decades on end they go from seed to sapling to mature trees, the strongest among them bending with the wind, firmly rooted in the soil beneath them.

img_4794

Sometime in the few weeks since I last walked this trail that final wind gust came along or perhaps the day simply came when nothing was left to hold it up anymore.  I like to think that it went down in a mighty gust of wind, with all the noise and fanfare it deserved on its final journey back into the ground it emerged from as a tiny sprout.

Although it now lies fallen, it still speaks loud and clear about all the years it stood, tall and resilient to nature’s forces.

The Road We’re On

Posted by pausesandclicks on 12/31/2016
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: house buying, house selling, moving, weekly photo challenge: path. 1 Comment

In the past, because we were a military family, our path was pretty much determined for us.  We got orders, for the past handful of moves we were assigned a home, and we moved.  Done.  We worked with what we were given and the house always became home.

This time we’re on a different path.  I was living in South Dakota when my husband bought the only home we’ve ever owned and the market back then in DC was completely different.  Competition for homes was fierce and he pretty much pounced on the first “For Sale by Owner” home he found, almost as soon as the man had finished putting the sign in the ground.

I’m part of the process in this current house-hunting adventure and the market is a buyer’s market.  For four days we traveled down many literal paths leading to many front doors.

This afternoon we have it narrowed down to two very different houses and while my feet know one of the front paths leads to the front door I’ll end up entering every single day, it’s the emotional path that house will put me on that I wonder the most about.  The battle that is ensuing is the practical end of this in my mind….the comparisons of cost, the work that needs to be done, the way rooms will be used, versus the unseen variables….who will my neighbors be, which house feels like it fits, which structure will enfold us and embrace our friends and family?

So I leave you with images of paths I’ve pulled out of my archives  which convey that sense of the unknown.

I can’t help but be curious and excited about what lies at the end of this particular house path.

Sweet Anticipation

Posted by pausesandclicks on 12/27/2016

I’ve always believed that anticipating an event or trip is often the best part of the experience.

Once the day or week arrives it goes by way too quickly but the waiting and the planning and the looking forward to….THAT is the sweet spot for me….the possibility, the promise, the anticipation.

Advent is all of that and more and Christmas Eve is the best anticipation of all.  Three little ones, attending church services to listen to the story of Jesus’ birth and then listening to their dad read “The Night Before Christmas” to them just prior to going to bed.  It’s a big mixture of religious and secular but to them it’s all about hearts filled with joy and the promise of good things to come.

My grandchildren and my son.

I never could have come close to predicting what this moment would be like twenty years ago.  That kind of anticipation was just too much to even fathom.

The Best Kind of New Horizon

My youngest son was married this past weekend.

This video looks back at their lives from the very beginning but once they said those vows it was all about what is to come.  They are wished the very best by all who witnessed their ceremony.  I’m pretty sure Alex has dreamed of this day since he was about ten years old and according to him it was all he ever imagined it to be….and more!

And us?  We now have three smart, talented, beautiful daughters-in-law and are thrilled Kayla has joined our family.

Life is good.  And these two pictures, which I will leave you with, simply make me smile!

Relax?!? Hahahahahahahaha………

Posted by pausesandclicks on 12/08/2016

Oh, the irony of this week’s photo challenge!

My house has been on the market since September.  For those of you who have been through this, you know just how many times I’ve vacuumed the carpets, blown leaves out of the yard, put away every single vestige of real people actually living in the home, then cleared out myself and the dog for a realtor to bring in a potential buyer.

It’s the Christmas season with all the preparations that entails.

I have a move scheduled for the beginning of January.  Which means it would be nice to buy a house in the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

And oh yeah, my son is getting married in two days.  Which means I’m currently in a rental home in another state with 14 family members under the same roof and many good friends who begin to arrive in town tomorrow…….yep, a whole lot of fun and celebration going on in my life these days but….relaxation….not so much!

invite5

Check back with me in a few months.

In the meantime you might occasionally find me with my faithful sidekick, in my winter woods, the one place where I know I’ll find moments of peace in the midst of an in-between life.

This too, shall pass.

My Christmas Epiphany

I’m a big believer in traditions.

As a military family our surroundings changed constantly. Each move brought new experiences and ways to celebrate the Christmas season so things that happened within our family every single year were essential to defining our sense of home during the holidays…..homemade Chex Mix, the tree with the careful placing of ornaments collected over the years, watching It’s A Wonderful Life and White Christmas, making butter cookies and countless batches of english toffee, the sending and receiving of cards that connect us to people all over the world, the choir singing Christmas carols at mass, a house that glows with tiny white lights, both inside and out.

It’s just not this time of year without those things.

Except this year it’s all different.

Christmas is in storage.
